Nicki Minaj – Pink Friday

This year, Minaj's had 15 songs appear on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, with seven of them hitting the Top 40. It's a feat that few artists — regardless of genre — have accomplished. So a round of applause, please, for 25-year-old Nicki Minaj, who seems to have brought something different to the world of mainstream hip-hop. There is a lot of anticipation surrounding the release of Nicki Minaj’s debut CD "Pink Friday." And there should be…

I really had to listen to the whole album twice before I could write this review. I was torn at first, but the second time around, I liked it a bit better and I am not sure that the third time I will be singing along…
She has been on numerous track with other super stars such as Luda, Diddy- dirty Money, Jay-Z, Kanye West and Rick Ross, but while Minaj's proven she can jump on someone's song and get the job done, on her own songs, she struggles to make something to call her own. The album opens with "I'm the Best," where Minaj boasts about her standing as rap's top female act, and she does it again on "Roman's Revenge" and then again on "Did It On'em." Other tracks are also sprinkled with similar rhymes and the whole idea gets old.

She does has some A-list support from names like Eminem, Riri, Drake, Will.i.am, Kanye West and Natasha Bedingfield. The sad part is that Minaj is lost in her overconfidence and on the track with other artists, she is overshadowed.

Minaj doesn't really give the impression of being someone who's spent a great deal of time huddled around a table and arguing over the best way to appeal to mainstream. The standard hip-hop litany of childhood misery, involving a crack-addicted father who attempted to murder her mother by trying to burn down their house. She may have had a better outcome if she had made a hard-core OG rap album. This album is somewhat a disappointment just because of how Minaj keeps putting herself at the top of the game. Who is she trying to dethrone… Lil’ Kim? Or is Minaj trying to be Lady Gaga of the  Hip-Hop community???

It is not a must in your collection, but remember, it will be over played and soon you will be tired of hearing her….

I give it 2.5 spins out of 5 possible.

The Black Eyed Peas - The Beginning

How do you follow up a party-packed multiplatinum smash called The E.N.D.? For Black Eyed Peas, The Beginning was the place to start. It all seems a bit backwards… The E.N.D came before The Beginning… but the new album pick up exactly where the last one E.N.Ded (in terms of the Euro-themed music). It seems that the party never stopped. The collective intelligence that powers the Peas delights in the dynamic interplay on lead single The Time, the ruthless thunder of techno and the glistening shards of minimal electro.
There are a few things wrong with this album. First, Will.i.am. I know, he’s the mastermind behind the group but since he’s moved into the producer sphere he’s obviously let it get into his pea-sized head that he is the greatest music producer and genius to have ever been born. He is all over this album, even to the point of the others in the group being reduced to back-up and guest appearances. He’s known for trying to spit out some quirky lyrics and these lyrics are some of the dumbest lyrics I’ve heard in a while. Second issue – Fergie. She has had massive success as a solo artist and even on the previous BEP album we heard her actually sing a bit. Not so much on this album. When she does appear it’s mostly to scream out a line or two. She feels missing in action on most of the album, however. As do the other members of the group because this album sounds a lot like Will.i.am’s recent failed solo artist quest.
The other problem is just the music itself. Many of the songs change speed, melody and tenor so fast they play like medleys, perfect for an ADHD driven music audience who have calluses on their skip button fingers. Golden oldies like the Dirty Dancing theme “Time of My Life,” Slick Rick’s “Children’s Story” and KC and The Sunshine Band’s “Baby Give It Up” are looted for their instant recognition and then immediately turned on their axes. The production magicians pull “The Time,” “Light Up the Night” and “Love You long Time” respectively out of their hats with huge amounts of sticky thump, wispy atmospherics and crawling, key-hopping synth that snuffs out all the 80’s sensibilities as the songs progress.
This album is such a let down, if this is the best the group can produce then really this album should be the true “E.N.D.” But if you just need a couple of old school/new school, pop, disco, Hip-Hop songs to shake your ass too, then this should be right up your alley. There isn’t a sound that isn’t represented in “The Beginning”…
I am not sure if this the beginning to the end for BEP...

Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy

Over the last year or so, rapper Kanye West has interrupted Taylor Swift (a page out of the best way to doushebag stardom guide book), sparred with Matt Lauer, and apologized to former President George W. Bush for suggesting during the Katrina disaster that he was racist. Say what you want about Kanye West and I, like many of you felt that he has the “diva:ish” tendencies, , but this new album is solid! I have to admit that I am not the biggest Kanye West fan, but there is no doubt that he is in full control when he enters the recording studio to record this new, his fifth album, and finds the rapper-producer flexing his considerable musical muscle like never before.
My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is his most maniacally inspired music yet, coasting on heroic levels of dementia, pimping on top of Mount Olympus. Yeezy goes for the grandeur of stadium rock, the all-devouring sonics of hip-hop, the erotic gloss of disco, and he goes for all of it, all the time. Nobody halfway sane could have made this album. Nobody else is making music this daring and weird, from the spooky space funk of "Gorgeous" to the King Crimson-biting "Power" to the paranoid staccato strings of "Monster." There is a big surprise for everyone at the six minute mark on the "Runaway" track… and I am not going to soil it…  I have to admit that I did not have high expectations, but I sure was wrong.  Kanye thinks you’re a moron if you settle for artists who don’t push as hard as he does. And that means pretty much everybody…

Dr Dre - Kush

The longest in production album, over a decade, may finally be near a release. One of Rap / Hip-Hop biggest stars and one of the original member of N.W.A, Dr. Dre has been promising the new album, Detox, for over a decade, and we have seen and heard some hints and teasers over the years and it appears the doctor is, finally, seriously, in the office, and now the final step: Dre has essentially confirmed that new single “Kush”, featuring Snoop Dogg, Akon, and a beat that will rattle your windows, is the first single from his long awaited new album.

The background music alone is enough to get fans excited about this first track from "Detox." It features a typically well-done and catchy thumping Dre beat backing it, with Akon singing the chorus followed by an "Inhale-Exhale" chant. Snoop Dogg appears on the song which will take fans back to the days of "Chronic" rapping all about marijuana.

In an interview with LA radio station, Power 106, Dre insisted that the vibe of “Kush” should not be any indication of the upcoming album’s content. Dre pushed this track out after a version of it had leaked online. Dre confirms that this is the only track on the album about weed smoking and this is not a representation of the album.

The last Dr. Dre album came out in 1999 and was titled "2001," a follow-up to his hip-hop classic "The Chronic." He's mentioned that he can "see the finish line" in terms of delivering the new album. Dre says he has maybe two or three more songs before the album is ready, and then you'll be hearing his innovative and pulsating beats once again. Seeing as his other two studio albums are considered hip hop classics, expectations are high but with a decade to produce, expect greatness from Dr. Dre.
Even though I don’t personally like the Akon involvement in this project, I am much exited to hear something new from Dr. Dre. There is and will be a lot of buzz coming from the Dr’s office and I can only assume that there will be Snoop Dogg albums in the works as well as another Eminem. Could it result in “Up in Smoke” tour II?

Old tapes...

Wow...
Time really goes by fast. I just came across some old tapes (yes.. it is cassette tapes I am talking about) that were recorded live at some of my old DJ events in Stockholm, Sweden. This one I am listening to now is from 1997:ish… got tracks like Toni Braxton, LLCOOLJ, Janet Jackson, Snap, some techno tracks and a lot more.
This is when it was all on wax (LP’s), great days for DJing.
I think I am going to convert them to MP3’s and post them here for your listening pleasure…
